[A] SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Scholar Margie graduating from high school
Scholar Margie Emag graduating from
college in 2002.

This program is targeted at existing development practitioners that do not as of yet hold college degrees, and who feel the need to complete their formal tertiary education. This is also open to incoming college students who have a career in development in mind and demonstrate a passion and interest in the field. Only fields related to sustainable, people-oriented development (social, economic, environmental) will be considered.

Requirements:
+ Applicants are recommended by development organizations (NGOs or similar institutions).
+ They must be Palawenos (born and raised in Palawan), and must present evidence of previous exemplary academic performance.
+ Scholars are also required to do volunteer work with development agencies during summer months as practicum. This will provide practical experience to complement the scholar's formal academic programs.
+ Finally, upon receipt of a college degree, scholars are required to provide a minimum of 3 months work service to the development sector for every year he/she is supported as a PDSI scholar.

Scholarship Coverage:
+ The scholarship covers full tuition costs, books, supplies, and subsistence allowance.
+ Scholars are required to maintain high academic and moral standards during the duration of their status as PDSI scholars.
+ Scholars meet monthly to provide peer support during the school year. Team building and personal enhancement/development sessions are also conducted to provide wholistic formation to the development of the scholars. Periodic meetings with the secretariat and the review committee are held to provide a venue for counseling and mentoring activities.
+ Scholarships are renewed annually.

[B] INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

This program is designed to provide continuing formation opportunities to development practitioners. This is targeted at existing development workers who have had at least 3 years of development experience and have a clear idea of the gaps in their skills and knowledge, and see how these could be filled with an internship or on-the-job-training program with an NGO or related development institution. This was conceptualized with the noticeable lack of financial resources for further formation of development workers despite many opportunities for training and internships. This program is still being developed.

REVIEW COMMITTEE AND SECRETARIAT

Currently, the PDSI program is managed by a handful of JVP Palawan alumni and development workers in the Philippines and abroad. A local Palawan-based review committee has been established to provide a permanent group that can provide lasting and continuous support to the program. This committee is composed of development leaders from the NGO sector who screen new scholars and interns and provide mentoring and placement functions for scholars during summer months and after graduation.
